Grace Chen, Vice President of Network Advertising, Loyalty, and Merchandise at PlayStation has announced the creation of PlayStation Stars, a new loyalty program aimed at engaging with the PlayStation community through reward-based campaigns and activities.

In a July 14th PlayStation Blog post, Chen outlines what PlayStation Stars members can expect from the program. It will be free to join, and by "completing a variety of campaigns and activities" (including a "Monthly check-in" and achieving certain trophies) players will be able to earn loyalty points and rewards. Members will then be able to use said loyalty points to redeem items from a catalog "that may include PSN wallet funds and select PlayStation Store products."

PlayStation Stars members will also be able to win digital collectibles themed around the brand's diverse "portfolio of products and franchises". At first glance one might assume these are NFTs, however, in an interview with the Washington Post, Chen is adamant that they are not. According to Chen "you can't trade them or sell them", and Sony and PlayStation are "not leveraging any blockchain technologies and definitely not NFTs" in the PlayStation Stars program.

PlayStation 5 players may be familiar with Astro's Playroom, a cute platformer that worked as both an introduction to the PlayStation 5 hardware and the new DualSense controller. It was also a love letter to the history of the PlayStation brand and in the game, players can gather numerous PlayStation-related collectibles and decorate the hub world with them. With that in mind, there is a good chance that the "digital representations... including figurines of beloved and iconic characters... as well as cherished devices" that PlayStation Stars members will be able to earn and collect, could very well be a console-wide expansion of this idea.

PlayStation Stars will be available to PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 players for free sometime in 2022.
