Initially created as a tabletop RPG in the World of Darkness setting, Vampire: The Masquerade quickly rose into popularity among the players worldwide. The game was then turned into a multi-platform video game, but unlike its predecessor, the original tabletop RPG, the video game version has never been critically acclaimed.
Paradox Interactive, the studio with the rights to the franchise, has recently established a Vampire Jam in which the attendees were expected to create games within the World of Darkness setting. The Jam was a success with over 80 games, and the winning game, The Heartless Lullaby, has since been released on Steam.
But Paradox’s surprises regarding the franchise do not end there. In a blog post that the World of Darkness has recently posted on their website, a new program called Unbound is now running! All developers can “make [their] own Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition games and monetize them”. The license is free for anyone who wants to create a game within this setting using Unbound.
Well, not entirely free. While the developers can retain “up to 67% of monetized projects”, the rest goes to the platform where they want to release the game. Furthermore, the developers are not entirely left alone, but they are expected to agree to the Licensing Agreement.
But these are only fair. The fact remains that everyone can make a Vampire game of their own now! Both video game enthusiasts and the World of Darkness fans are excited to see where this new project will lead, and we are all hopeful about the games.
