Call of Duty: Warzone and the Problem With Crossovers

Godzilla and King Kong enter the warzone... but why?

On Caldera Island, a storm is brewing. The battle royale of Call of Duty: Warzone has awoken an ancient, but familiar, threat and the tropical battleground is set to host the ultimate showdown.

A year after its release, monster mash-up Godzilla vs Kong is crossing over with Call of Duty Vanguard and Warzone in the hit games’ upcoming third season. Vanguard season three, ‘Classified Arms’, will begin on April 27th; and the hotly anticipated arrival of Godzilla and King Kong in ‘Operation Monarch’ is scheduled for a May 11th start.

On the surface the timing of this crossover makes no sense; Godzilla vs Kong was released in cinemas in March 2021 and there are no other films in Warner Bros.’ MonsterVerse due to be released anytime soon. As much as fellow battle royale Fortnite receives criticism for its overabundance of crossover characters, they are, for the most part, not only timely but also fit into the games’ aesthetic. Godzilla and Kong look incredible in the promotional teaser for Operation Monarch, but the pair can be added to the growing list of random crossovers in Call of Duty: Warzone’s history.

April 19th saw rapper Snoop Dogg become a playable operative in Vanguard and Warzone, on February 22nd the Armored Titan from hit anime series Attack on Titan appeared in a downright ugly cosmetic; and even when Warzone was still set in Verdansk, Frank the Bunny from cult classic Donnie Darko was added to the game… for some reason.

Vanguard released as a World War II shooter, now it isn’t even sure what it is.
