Lionsgate Motion Picture Group has announced that Kevin Hart has joined the cast of Borderlands. Hart will play the role of Roland, the playable military soldier from the first Borderlands game and a key supporting character in Borderlands 2. He will be acting alongside Cate Blanchett, who plays the main character of the film, Siren Lilith. The screenplay is written by Craig Mazin and directed by Eli Roth. Roth said he is “thrilled to be working with Kevin”, and says that the role will be a new and exciting challenge for Hart.
Reactions of Hart’s casting has been very negative with Borderlands fan communities, calling the actor a complete departure from the Roland they love. In the first Borderlands game, Roland was upbeat and could crack jokes as much as the rest of the cast but wasn’t the primary comedic focus. In the second game, Roland had become much more stoic after the events of Pandora and Hyperion. Critics believe Hart will portray Roland in a too humorous manner and lacks the physicality for a believable experienced soldier.
