A Notice of Civil Claim has appeared online stating that Electronic Arts Canada Inc is being suited by plaintiffs Mark Sutherland and Shawn Moore. The two argue that Electronic Art’s loot box systems are a violation of Canada’s gambling regulations. While Sutherland and Moore have personally purchased loot boxes in the past, the lawsuit is on the behalf of all customers over the last decade. The claim includes many Electronic Arts franchises like Madden NFL, FIFA, UFC, Apex Legends, Battlefield, Mass Effect, and Plants vs Zombies.
As this is a civil suit, it will have no direct correlation on government regulations. However, if Sutherland and Moore win the case it may indirectly encourage Canadian regulators to closer scrutinize the game industry. Recently, countries like Belgium and the Netherlands have passed laws overseeing loot boxes, joining the ranks of South Korea and Japan that previously established their own laws. The United States is also currently undergoing its own investigation on loot boxes, and may propose regulations in the future.
