Nostalgia is a powerful tool and while the game industry brandishes it like a weapon, at least it means that, in some way, conservation is selectively guaranteed. One of the latest games to be brought forth from the brinks of your dad's laptop is Pharaoh: A New Era.

That's right, Pharaoh, one of the classic city builder simulations of yore is receiving the remake treatment on PC. What PC platform will get this cult hit is yet undecided. Part of the remake is code that is "built from the ground up," which is exactly the dad humor the game should apply to bring all the dads to the grill or yard, as long as there is a grill.

The game that is now two decades old will update the user interface (UI), as well as a mysterious "improved mechanisms" feature. Some lavish 2D art gets added too, though no mention as of yet if this sim will go full 4K, like several of their exhumed peers. Instead, the official page for Pharaoh: A New Era touts the ancient Ultra HD term that's easier for your dad to understand.

Pharaoh: A New Era includes the Cleopatra expansion, applied more elegantly than its current edition, which appends it to the title. Speaking of which, Cleopatra is playable on modern setups just fine, being available on both Steam and GOG, so it's an odd choice to spruce this one up. There is likely, however, an audience out there that would just like to continue playing this game, but prettier. People like your dad, for instance.

Pharaoh: A New Era is being published by Dotemu, the company who has dipped their toe into revitalizing arcade games and has since gone full monty in their efforts. Not only did Dotemu bring back the classic Windjammers, they're also working on a sequel, as well as being responsible for publishing a new Streets of Rage. If anything, this shows that Pharaoh: A New Era is in the hands of people who truly care.
