Hackers Make $1 Million Stealing Fortnite Accounts

10,000s of Fortnite users have their accounts compromised each second

Cybercrime research firm Data Viper has released a report explaining how hackers obtain tens of thousands of Fortnite accounts in seconds and resell them for up to $2,500 each. The biggest lapse in security comes from players choosing usernames and passwords involved in past breaches. Even if data was hacked years ago, or from a non-gaming system, programs may still have the information in their database. These automated systems can also apply near instant variations, such as changing capitalization, numbers, symbols, or rearranging characters. Some hackers go as far to license proxy rotators, as to avoid being detected by Epic’s login attempt limitation. Others will scan accounts to find skins and other items of value, cherry picking the most profitable.

The account is then resold on the dark web from anywhere between $25-$2,500, depending on the amount and type of skins. The price will be greatly raised if it is bundled with the player’s associated stolen e-mail account, increasing the likelihood that buyers won’t have their access rescinded by Epic. In total, this has amounted to some hackers earning close to $1 million a year, although $500,000 is closer to the median.
