Sony Invests $250 Million Into Epic Games

Sony Corporation has become a minority shareholder in Epic

By Fragnarok, Posted 10 Jul 2020

Sony and Epic Games have released a statement announcing a partnership in which Sony has bought shares of Epic worth $250 million. The deal not only allows a link between PlayStation and Fortnite, but also each company’s larger portfolio like Sony Music, Sony Pictures, Unreal Engine, and the Epic Game Store. This could allow easier development of Unreal Engine 5 games on PlayStation 5, and also Sony produced films based on Epic’s franchises.

With Epic Games current valuation of $1.83 billion, Sony’s contribution accounts for only a 1.4% minority stake. This pales in comparison to Tecent’s share of almost 40% of Epic Games. It is also not clear if all of Sony’s shares will be of voting eligible common class, or more passive non-voting preferred stock.

This deal will not prevent Epic Games from working with Microsoft, Nintendo, or other game studios in any form. As licensing of the Unreal Engine is a large part of Epic Game’s revenue, it would be strategic to keep business as usual.
