Don't Starve is a survival based game with a Tim Burton-esque art style that forces players to craft structures for survival and fight off unique, terrifying monsters. Since its initial launch in 2013, fans have speculated that the game would transition to a mobile launch, due to its controls and crafting systems that would be ideal for touchscreen. The game's producer, Klei Entertainment, soon made this dream a reality, launching Don't Starve: Pocket Edition in 2015, though specifically for iPad. The mobile version of the game improved over the years, with the Pocket Edition being ported over to iPhone later that year, and adding an on-screen joystick to aid movement.

With the growing success of their original Don't Starve: Pocket Edition as well as Don't Starve: Shipwrecked (2017) for mobile, Klei realized the popularity and compatibility of its game on mobile devices. Due to this, a new standalone game has been announced, which will launch exclusively on mobile devices. The trailer, which was released on June 24, reveals a slightly new look to the Don't Starve universe, but seems to retain its original idea.

The new installment will be titled Don't Starve: Newhome, and will follow the same Don't Starve formula that has been loved by fans for so many years. However, with this new game come some changes, and their impacts on the game remain to be seen. Firstly, the game will not be made by Klei, but instead developed by Shengqu Games and published by Tencent. Based on the fact that Klei has sanctioned the use of their characters, franchise name and monster art for this new game, players can expect Newhome to live up to the qualities of its predecessors.

Secondly, the game will introduce new ways to interact with other players, offering a multiplayer feature that has only been represented in their desktop launch of Don't Starve Together. With this, players will be able to build permanent homes within the game and maintain a personal progression system. New creatures, recipes, and crafting materials will also be introduced, and the game encourages players to team up with their friends to explore the world.

Don't Starve: Newhome will also give players a unique new story mode, separate from other games in the series. In order to help this game be as enjoyable as possible, the developers are looking for beta testers to help shape this new experience. Players who are 13 years or older and live in the US or Canada are encouraged to apply on the game's official website. As with other Don't Starve mobile games, Newhome closed beta will be available for both iOS and Android players, with the beta test launching in July of 2020. Those who are accepted into the closed beta will earn exclusive in-game items, which will carry over to the full game once it goes live.

Don't Starve: Newhome will enter closed beta in July 2020 for iOS and Android devices.
