Today it has been reported that Sony will be supporting publishers who want to offer PlayStation 5 versions of previously released PlayStation 4 games at no extra charge to players. Of course, players will need to already own a PlayStation 4 version of the game, but the important part of this news is that it seems as though Sony will be offering a version of Microsoft's Smart Delivery.
This news was first shared on Reddit, but picked up by ScreenRant. It came from a Japanese interview with GameSpark, in which a spokesperson for Sony explained that they would be willing to help publishers provide free upgrades to PlayStation 5 versions of PlayStation 4 games if they opted into Sony's programme for this service.
While no details of what the programme that publishers need to opt into have been shared, this does show that Sony is thinking about how best to bridge the gap between console generations.
There are a number of big games still to release this year, including two PlayStation exclusives, The Last Of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima. Sony really should be considering making an upgrade to the PlayStation 5 versions of these games free for all PlayStation 4 owners, and announcing that feature now. It would help sell more systems later this year when their next-generation console launches.
