What is the PlayStation Move?

By canana, Posted 03 Oct 2010

What is the PlayStation Move: just a clone of the Wii Remote - in an attempt to respond to the tremendous success by Nintendo - or creating a new device, focused on other aspects of the interpretation of the movements of players? The answer to this question will only come with time, with many tests and, of course, after the release of games that really take advantage of Sony's new peripheral. The good news is that Move already arrived on Sept. 19 to the U.S. - while some parts of Europe received the new technology with four days in advance.

The new controller was designed by Sony in order to perform maximum accuracy in reading the movements of players, providing an almost perfect response on the screen. To achieve its goal, Move brings in its interior two motion sensors: an accelerometer and a gyroscope, each able to measure displacements on three axes. However, the big difference is on the edge (made with soft rubber), which operates in conjunction with the camera, providing important data for the PlayStation 3. So, the games start to recognize, besides the traditional gestures and inclinations, absolute positions in space, portraying depth, height and distance. There is also the Navigation Controller (cruise control), similar to the Nunchuk of Nintendo. The additional number makes the time control, with an analog stick. Communication with the Move is done via Bluetooth, no cables needed.

It doesn't matter if you already own a PlayStation 3 or want to buy it now because there will be a number of different packages, given the need for many consumers. Firstly we have the complete kit  for $399, containing the following items:

PlayStation Move, Sony, Wii, Remote, PlayStation 3, PlayStation Eye, Sports Champions, DUALSHOCK 3, Move Starter Kit, Navigation Controller, Time Crisis: Razing Storm, MadCatz

PlayStation 3 Slim 320 GB;

PlayStation Move;- Camera PlayStation Eye;
- DUALSHOCK 3;
- Demonstration Disc;
- Sports Champions (Game).

For those who already own the console, but not the camera, Sony provides the Move Starter Kit, which contains the PlayStation Eye camera, the game Sports Champions and Move. The suggested price is $99.99.

Lastly, for those who already own the console, these products can be sold separately:

- PlayStation Move — US$49,99;
- Navigation Controller — US$29,99;
- PlayStation Eye — US$39,99.

You have spare money and don't know how to spend it? Well ... You can look at the Move accessories. Sony has its official line, comprised of a recharging base - which includes two controls - and the pistol in white and red, which facilitates the crosshairs for games like Time Crisis: Razing Storm.

Other companies are already following Sony since Move's launch, preparing their own versions of accessories. The MadCatz - famed for his work in the production of special controls and Fighsticks for fighting games from Capcom - has listed a few products. The items consist of pistols (very similar to those offered by Sony), charging stations, and extensions to the camera cable and even rubberized covers, which supposedly protects the controls against the effects of continuous use.

It has been confirmed by Sony that 31 games will be compatible with Move and they would be in stores by the end of 2010. The list, however, is composed of two distinct groups: one has the M as a minimum requirement for the games, while the other operates normally with a standard control, with optional features focused on new devices. The full list of games can be seen below:

Despite huge investments in marketing campaigns (something that will show below), executives believe that Move is not an immediate blockbuster, even though rankings for pre-store sales may Amazon.com proving otherwise. In an interview with Eurogamer, granted in late August, Ray Maguire said that the product will become a great success over time, exactly as seen with the first PlayStation Eye. Among the measures taken by Sony to boost sales, was down prices of games like Sports Champions, Start The Party! Kung Fu and Rider, which will cost $ 39.99 each. Still dealing with the success of Move, David Cage - the creator of Heavy Rain - said that the key to success is the quality of games released, which should largely take the capabilities of the new controls, perhaps even raising the hardcore consumers.

Kevin Butler - character preformed by Jerry Lambert, who became star in the United States last year - will appear in new scenes, especially for the launch of Move. The first video was released in Sony's official blog. Besides the promotion video, the company also invested in a special website that brings all sorts of comparative tables, with the purpose of annoying the competition and make consumers laugh, following the infamous models created by those who disliked iPhones. The divisions of Europe and Japan have adopted strategies in less quizzical style, just pointing out everything that can be done with the new controls. Only time will tell if the new technology by Sony will be a success or a failure.  You're ready to buy your own?

    I wasn't following much about the Move, since I'm not a fan of PS3 but I couldn't avoid this fine article. I knew that the MadCatz would be getting involved with the motion sensing. It surely is a good news. But I'm a little worried about the price. $99.99 is a little to much to start with. Couldn't been a little less as a promotional offer, so that the PS3 owners wouldn't hesitate to grab one piece. And, your graph says pinpoint accuracy. I highly doubt it'll really be happening. It's hard to believe that Move will be performing better than the Wii. I guess time will tell. With all those 31 games to demonstrate, Move has a big challenge to face. Let's hope it does't disappoint its fans.

  • What can I say, it's a great article. You seem to have researched quite a lot before writing it. 31 games will be a good start. But how the hell are you going to play NBA 2K11 with a sensor stick? I have another question. Will all the future releases for PS3 will be supported by Move?

  • @Sleven - well, that's a hard question, probably some game are going to have Move support, but untl then we need to get some feedback about this new technology.

    Posted Oct 07, 2010

  • @canana : Since the technology is in, I believe most games will get used to the Move.

  • The Move sure does look pretty good, I'm exicted to see what they are doing with it.
