If yes, you would definitely have realized that if you want to buy all the needed software, that’s going to cost you a small fortune. In fact, in some cases the overall price could reach the amount of money you‘d pay for another PC. No reason to worry. AVG Antivirus: So many antiviruses in the market, but you can’t afford any of them at the moment. Nothing to worry about. The free version of AVG antivirus has a very good percentage dealing with viruses that may sneak into your computer, at least the best we could find and that’s free. It updates its database quite often and it won’t waste the resources of your computer.
Spybot Search & Destroy: Alright, we just dealt with the viruses but what about the nasty Trojans, worms, malwares, spywares etc? Spybot Search & Destroy will deal with them. Capable of neutralizing over 600,000 possible threats, this little utility will be your computer’s safety net.
Open Office: Possibly the most important freeware utility and we recommend it 110%. It’s the ideal office suite, handy for a total amateur user who just wants to write a simple essay, great for a little more experienced one who wants to create a pdf file. Honestly speaking, you will forget that Microsoft Office even exists!
VLC Player: You‘re still using Windows Media Player? What is your computer’s RAM anyway? Are you sure it can open all kind of video files? Unfortunately it doesn’t. However, VLC Player does. Yes, it opens absolutely every known kind of video and audio file, plus it has its own codecs. You will be definitely impressed by the resolution and the greatness that VLC achieves when it opens a High Definition file (.mkv).
K-Lite codecs: Even though VLC has its own codecs, K-Lite offers the ultimate codecs experience and totally free. For those who are still using Windows Media Player, K-Lite will make your life easier and will stop the “WMP cannot open this file” message.
Avisplit: The most experienced users have definitely heard of this. If you‘re new and you don’t know what Avisplit is/does, well it simply can split OR join avi files. Its menu is very easy to understand and trust us, there’s a lot fun when you try to cut your favorite moments from video and create your desired one.
Gimp: I simply cannot believe that this utility is (still) free!!! Surely Corel is the master of image editing, but when Gimp is available… Tremendous amount of tools, both in quality and quantity, plenty of features and endless ways of image editing, Gimp is another utility we recommend with eyes shut.
Audiograbber: You have some old CDs on your old shelf and you want to put them in your computer? No problem, Audiograbber does exactly what its name says. It will grab them, compress them very fast and in very good quality.
7zip: The master of compression/decompression utilities. Its biggest advantage is the fact that even if a compressed file has a different extension (not .zip .rar etc), it will still decompress it, something that WinZip fails to do so. 7zip also achieves a very good percentage of compression, something that can be proved quite useful if you want to include many files in a back up CD or DVD.
Ashampoo Burning Studio Free: Hmmm, back up CD/DVD… We bet that the first thing that crossed your mind was to go and get Nero Burning Rom, right? WRONG!!! Ashampoo does almost exactly what Nero does, its way of recording is quite similar and making back up for your system is so simple, as it barely has any flaws.
Partition Logic: Using quite simple steps, this little thing can do magic with your hard disk. It can divide your hard disk into as many parts as you want and with the same easiness it can put together its partitions if you want.
Foobar2000: You really believed that we still use Winamp? Well, it’s not that it’s a bad programme or anything, but Foobar2000’s highly modular design in combination with an extensive software development kit just won our heart. This little treasure has plenty of options for support and file organization as well.
Foxit Reader: The free version of it does almost exactly what Acrobat Reader does too, with a tiny detail… It’s way faster and way smaller. The PDF reader you must have and you may convert a huge .pdf file into a simple text file at no time.
Where can I find all those little masterpieces should I want to install them in my computer, someone may ask. The easiest way is to type the names of them each time in the best search engine available and you will immediately find the official sites. Surely, the software that we do have to pay offer more than the free utilities, but the gap has been significantly narrowed. There are so many freelance developers in the market that work for the community and not for the computer industries and their aim is to be as much helpful as they can. And the best way to encourage them to create/upgrade more of these installments is to promote them as much as we can, don’t you think?

Great info! There are great free software that can be very useful to all the ones that can't affort for paying a higher price. I started with GIMP by the way. :)
I am using AVG. I am using VLC. I already recommended OpenOffice to someone. Glad that you also included FoxIT Reader too. I also used GIMP. Its a masterpiece!!
I would also recommended another software in the list. Blender. Yes it is one of the only free 3D software in the internet which can match big 3D packages like 3D Max and Maya. I am using Blender to create a Dodge Charger for the NoobFeed animation. Even Blender has got fluid animation which even few commercial software boast this feautre.
Another free software you can get is Daz 3d. I used the software to create that Anime girl for the NoobFeed animation.
I've used Audio Grabber and VLC player and K-Lite Codecs. Really helpful software. Great feature :D I'm going to try the Foxit Reader now.
you don't have to recommend me gimp to get it, it's the most awesome image editor ever :P
Excellent feature. I hope you continue writing on this section :) I've never used GIMP before as I'm used to photoshop. But I'm still going to try it out.

I used AVG free a lot when I was with XP but now feeling free without using any Antivirus at all with Se7en :P I used Open Office with Linux earlier; in fact I had to as all of our University PCs were Linux built. VLC is a great player as it supports many of the video formats. When I watch a movie other than English then I just download the SRT subtitle file & that really helps with VLC. Yes WMP users must use K-Lite codecs. 7zip is cool too but I like winzip more. For partioning the HDD I like the Win XP CD most & then come Norton or Powerquest Partition Magic.
