Modern massively multiplayer online games (MMOs) have come a long way from their origins in word-based tunnels. Growth of the popularity of this genre has reached its peak, heavily contributed by many founding titles, including the massive success of the games like World of Warcraft, Final Fantasy XI, Guild Wars, EVE Online, The Lord of the Rings Online, and a few more.

Every year we see tons of new MMORPGs, and more keep coming. Keeping that in check, we've listed some of the most exciting Massive Multiplayer Online Role-Playing games presently being developed and are scheduled for release in 2023 or 2024. In reality, though, dozens upon dozens of MMORPGs are currently in various stages of development, and the genre is growing at an unprecedented rate.

 

Throne and Liberty

NCSoft's upcoming PC and PlayStation 5 exclusive Throne and Liberty is an original IP. Formerly known as Project TL, it is an upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) intended to be a successor to Lineage before diverging into its own project.

The gameplay area of Throne and Liberty is continuous and open for exploration. The game features a dynamic weather mechanism that will affect both the combat system and the graphic representation of the world. Because it is an MMO meant to encourage players to tell their stories, the developers have described the game's storyline as a background saga instead of a narrative that prevails over your experience.

The release of Throne and Liberty is scheduled for the first half of 2023, though an exact date has yet to be determined. You can anticipate the game will go through a closed beta period, which will be tested before release.

 

Pax Dei

Pax Dei is an upcoming social sandbox MMO developed by Mainframe Industries where everyone believes in magic and accepts that ghosts and other fantastical beings exist. The legends of the Middle Ages serve as inspiration for this massively multiplayer online sandbox game. This isn't an exaggeration but rather a natural follow-up to a game that places a premium on the player's ability to shape the world through actions.

Mainframe Industries says players will build everything in Pax Dei's world, from gardens and clothes to walls and weapons. They will also participate with a community of thousands of other players as they discover new areas, construct dwellings, establish their reputations, and write their own stories. Players will work together in real-time as they build their empires. While forming alliances with others in the online experience will likely be a big draw, Pax Dei will feature PvP and Clan Vs. Clan options.

Playtest registrations for the Pax Dei title are currently open on Mainframe Industries' website. Those who can't wait to begin crafting their own unique story in the MMO can do so without waiting for the company to announce a release date.

 

Night Crows

MADNGINE, a studio also engaged in the production of V4, HIT, and OVERHIT is currently working on developing Night Crows. The game is a third-person action massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG). The primary draw of the title will be that it will support player-versus-player combat between more than one thousand users at once.

The story of Night Crows takes place in Europe around the 13th century and focuses on a guild named Night Crows. That's our guild right there. As we meet to fight off imminent dangers, it is fascinating to see that among those who have joined us are members of the royal family, the Pope himself, knights, and other important religious figures. Despite having a rather conventional setting and an even more generic premise, this Korean massively multiplayer online game is not noted for its narrative richness.

The game is anticipated to be available for purchase in April of 2023. The developers have not disclosed whether or not they intend to run beta tests before the game's launch, nor have they stated whether or not pre-registration would result in any kind of bonus or incentive. Or if there is the option to pre-register for anything at all.

 

Dune: Awakening

Dune: Awakening is a free-to-play massively multiplayer online survival game developed by Funcom and published by Legendary Entertainment. This open-world survival massively multiplayer online game takes place on the desert planet Arrakis, setting thousands of players will share. Arrakis will be a continuous environment that blends the challenging survival gameplay of massive, persistent online games with the social components of those games.

The sandbox game Dune: Awakening has a stunning visual style packed with highly accurate depictions of the desert planet Arrakis. The name of the game is survival. The planet Dune is a hazardous place to live due to sandworms and a harsh atmosphere. The game requested the beta signups, but other than that, we received no further information.

 

ARK 2

Studio Wildcard is developing Ark 2 as the follow-up to their successful survival game Ark: Survival Evolved. Ark 2 is one of the most anticipated new games of 2023, promising to send players to a larger shared environment with souls-like melee action that expands on the foundation of one of the best survival games of recent years.

Unsurprisingly, ARK 2 will continue in the same vein as the original game: a successful open-world multiplayer survival experience. Yet, several improvements are in the works. The great action in ARK 2 will be experienced from a third-person perspective, so get ready to see your character mantle, slide, free-climb, parkour, and swing. Dinosaurs are inevitable, but we also get Vin Deisel this time.

ARK 2 is planned for the 2023 release. The developers haven't given us a specific release timetable, but we may expect to hear more as the release date draws nearer.

 

Legend of Ymir

Legend of YMIR is an upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game developed by the WEMADE studio. It's an upcoming massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that will run on next-gen consoles. Using the Scandinavian world as a foundation, Legend of Ymir aims to retell the narrative of Mir in a new context while fusing elements of fantasy and realism.

The game's story has been kept a secret, although it will contain PVP battles. The narrative of MIR will be retold in a fantasy environment in this new massively multiplayer online role-playing game. Additionally, siege warfare will be available for PvP in Legend of YMIR. The worldview of the MIR series is reimagined in Legend of YMIR from a Northern European perspective. Ashes of Creation

Ashes of Creation is a forthcoming high fantasy MMORPG developed by Intrepid Studios and released by Sony Online Entertainment. This game has a player-driven environment, player-built houses, dynamic events, and PVP combat.

The game has been under development for quite some time, while it began its pre-alpha phase in December 2017 and is still in development. The game has emerged as one of the most anticipated massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs). While tidbits about the game have been floating around the web, important details have remained secret.

Though the team may consider alternative platforms for the MMO's continued existence as development continues, as of April 1, 2022, they are confident of only one thing: Ashes of Creation will be available exclusively on PC.

 

Nightingale

Inflexion Games, the studio behind the upcoming shared-world survival game Nightingale, is full of industry veterans and former BioWare employees behind the coming MMO Nightingale.

The destruction of the arcane gateway system has left you isolated from your own reality. As a result of the disaster, you find yourself in a perilous maze of enchanted but perilous Fae lands, where you must struggle for survival. Your mission is to master Realmwalking so you can travel safely via the network of gates between dimensions. Finding your way to Nightingale, the final remaining human stronghold, is only possible once you solve this puzzle.

A closed beta for Nightingale will begin in early 2023, with early access following in the spring. Both will launch only for PC, which may be some time before we learn what Nightingale is.

Soulframe

The developers of Warframe have unveiled a free-to-play game called Soulframe, which diverges from the sci-fi focus of its predecessor in favor of a more fantastical setting. In many ways, Digital Extremes' latest massively multiplayer online game (MMO), Soulframe, is a direct sequel to their wildly successful first MMO, Warframe.

Compared to Warframe, it will emphasize fantasy and action-oriented gameplay while remaining a free-to-play title that will recoup its development costs through in-game microtransactions. The game appears to be in its early stages of development; therefore, information about it is currently scarce. But, we do have enough information to whet your curiosity.

There has yet to be a set release date for Soulframe, as development is still in its infancy. Even the first announcement trailer doesn't include a release window, making it difficult to predict when the game will be available.

 

Into The Echo

Canadian studio Etlok Studios has announced their next MMO role-playing game, Into The Echo. Players in Into The Echo can build their reputation and discover their place in an enchantingly realized shared universe while engaging in traditional gameplay elements like resource collection, crafting puzzle solving, and combat.

Although the game's developers have said that combat will be playable in the final release, they haven't said whether it will be tab-target, action, or a hybrid system. While Into the Echo is still in the works, its teaser video promises a pre-alpha version will be available soon so players can learn more about the massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that aims to revolutionize the industry.

Chrono Odyssey

Chrono Odyssey, formerly known as Npixel's top-secret Project S, will be developed by the company's South Korean studio and released this year. Even though it's one of the more aesthetically pleasing MMORPGs, Chrono Odyssey faces tough competition in a niche that's difficult to break into. The South Korean development studio NPIXEL has announced that they are working on a Next-Gen Fantasy MMORPG called Chrono Odyssey for PC, Consoles, and Mobile, and the game itself will be released in 2023.
