Steam Games Use Corona Virus References To Sell, Because Of Course They Would

Online store, Steam, is nothing if not a predictable beast these days. Everyone is able to put up a game for purchase and, obviously, during the global Coronavirus pandemic, this leads to several games using the occasion for name recognition. Here's just a selection of those opportunistic games that launched this week.

In Toilet Paper Crisis Simulator 2020, a playable character runs around a "Brawlmart" parking lot, kicking shopping carts and collecting the rolls of toilet paper that fall out. That's pretty much it. There are four levels, which will cost €0.79.

The next one is called Extreme Social Distancing. Here, the goal is to play keep-away, by controlling different people with separate analog sticks. There is multiplayer, but the game also allows for singleplayer, for those who are stuck alone. The game is currently on sale for €2.99.

Admittedly, the next being called Coronator is, at least, kind of original. Gameplay, however, pretty much just consists of clicking virus shapes on a moving screen. While the game touts itself as a shoot 'em up, there is no reticle and clicking just happens with a mouse pointer, amidst hemoglobin shapes. This thing sets back consumers €2.39.

Coronavirus Extinction is the most accomplished look of the bunch at a sale price of €0.63. Players try to shoot each other in a 2D multiplayer arena, though the virus connection is pretty tenuous. There are multiple weapons and environments to play in the game; so that's something.

While COVID-19 has the cleanest look, the shooter also smells of a prefab asset flip, certainly when taking into account the blunt name. Once more, the goal is just to shoot virus spheres in a neon arena, for the sale price of €1.75.

Finally, we have "Let me leave corona zone," with that punctuation, for the sale price of €0.75. This game repackages the classic, pitch-black, first-person horror walking simulator, where the threat is now, well, it's obvious. The goal is simply to try and find the exit.

There's at least one of these things releasing on Steam every day, but this tactic still pales to games like Sex With Hand, Hentai Roguelike or Boobs Saga. All these titles were released on the same day. You can look those Steam games up at your leisure, as long as you remember to do the research in an incognito tab.

"There's one every day" is certainly a weird motto for Steam to uphold.
