Devil May Cry V launches next week and it has been a long time coming. With the fifth installment in the main series coming soon let us look back at the franchises long history and rate all the games from worst to best.

8. Devil May Cry 2

Widely considered the low point of the series, a lot was expected of Devil May Cry 2 following the first game's impressive release. Unfortunately, the game's combat, difficulty, and bland environments and the wasted potential of newcomer Lucia.  Dante was also heavily criticized, taking a more of a serious tone as opposed to his cocky and goofy attitude towards hostile situations. Fortunately, the series didn't repeat the mistakes of this title.

7. Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition

After years of waiting for a sequel to Devil May Cry V, a remake of Devil May Cry 4 wasn't ideal. The game did feature new playable characters such as Vergil, Lady, and Trish as well as Legendary Dark Knight mode which made Dante Must Die look easy. It was a good remake of a great game but after years of asking, we just wanted Devil May Cry V.

6. Devil May Cry 4

The original Devil May Cry 4 was a gem, providing not only a new character but the chance to fight Dante as a boss. Nero was mostly well-received, especially his Devil Bringer and unique attacks. Dante, of course, was the star with his own style that gave players free rein of all the styles introduced in Devil May Cry 3.

The mix of great enemy design, intense boss battles, and incredible music highlighted why this series was so beloved. Although the remake did improve on many of the original's shortcomings it didn't leave the same impact.

5. Devil May Cry HD Collection

An HD remake of the first Devil May Cry games this collection allowed players to experience every nostalgic moment in the original trilogy. It was your standard HD remake and a great way for newcomers to enjoy this legendary series.

4. Devil May Cry

The series that brought the franchise into existence, Devil May Cry created the edifice that Dante's adventures are built on. A combination of sword and gunplay against deadly supernatural beasts and unique weapons made this game a hit. It was challenging, fascinating, and most importantly fun. Who could forget the time Dante got impaled by Rebellion, access devil trigger for the first time, and obtain the Sword of Sparta? It's all here and still one of the best moments in series.

3. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition

A remake of one of the best in the series Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening Special Edition added more modes, an extra boss battle, Turbo Mode, and most importantly the ability to play as Vergil. So why is this third on the list if its the updated version of Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening?  It was because Vergil's campaign was simply a copy and paste adventure of Dante's campaign. Those looking for a what-if situation of Vergil succeeding won't find it here.

Personally, I was disappointed with this. When I saw the chance to play as Vergil I assumed you would be able to fight Dante in the campaign. I'm still salty about this.

DmC: Devil May Cry,NoobFeed,Ninja Theory,Capcom,

2. DmC: Devil May Cry / Definitive Edition

Ninja Theory was hounded with negative comments when DmC: Devil May Cry was revealed and I was one of them. Serving as an alternate telling with the same characters DmC: Devil May Cry was actually a good game that featured a great narrative set within the realm of reality combined with the original lore of demon control.

Each of the characters was genuine in their original personas and the combat was one of the best in the series. This thanks to Ninja Theory crafting an easier system cancellation technique that was infamous for its difficulty in Devil May Cry 3. Unfortunately, the game's DLC ended on a cliffhanger and while Ninja Theory has expressed interest in making another game it's up to Capcom to give the green light. If you love Devil May Cry you need to try this game. Best of all you can purchase the Definitive Edition and get Vergil's Downfall.

Since the Definitive Edition is technically the same game, with visual and technical updates along with all the previous DLC we decided to include it as one title. It's not a great leap like the HD collections combining multiple games, brand new characters or boss fights.

1. Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening

The best in the series and one of the hardest games of its generation Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening fixed all the issues that plagued the previous installment. Serving as a prequel we get to see Dante confront his brother Vergil for the first time and fight his way to becoming the legendary warrior of the first game.

Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening was full of outstanding boss fights, excellent musical scores, and was a challenge throughout. People love to compare Dark Souls to difficult games but the original Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening put those games to shame, especially on Dante Must Die.
