Shadow of the Tomb Raider Has Too Many Trailers

Why does Shadow of the Tomb Raider have so many trailers?

Shadow of the Tomb Raider is one of the biggest games this year. It marks the end of the 2013 reboot and judging from the trailers the game is providing more of what players have come to expect from the series. However, that's the problem. Eidos Montreal and Square Enix have released so many trailers. This oversaturation has killed much of the excitement over Lara's upcoming adventure by reducing the desire to see the next reveal.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider,NoobFeed,

Since the release of the teaser trailer back on March 15th, not including the video showing the development team, we've had about 19 videos showcasing the gameplay of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. This included combat, exploration, puzzles, takedowns, resources, and more. A lot of these trailers have only provided snippets of gameplay, most of them repeating specific situations, this overuse of footage has killed much of the anticipation for the next reveal.

There are fine lines developers and publishers have to walk to keep the game they're developing relevant without exposing too much. A great example being EA's Titanfall 2which leading up to its release had little information about the game being released, similarly how EA is choosing to market Battlefield V as well, so when it launched no one had any idea it was available. However, overexposure can kill a game's appeal as fans lose interest in seeing more if too much is shown.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider has been so heavily exposed that the thrill of seeing something new has been mostly drained. We've come to expect that a new trailer will drop showing another aspect of Lara's adventure.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider,NoobFeed,

This is not to say that Shadow of the Tomb Raider won't be a great game, it looks amazing. However, after releasing so many trailers in such frequency the excitement of seeing something about this game get uploaded has lost a lot of its momentum. Keeping a balance between teasing new information and delivering on that continues that flow of anticipation as gamers grow more eager to see what will be shown next. With Shadow of the Tomb Raider, that desire has been replaced with expected.
