My Top Four Brawlers

Ultimate Injustice Kombat 6, my experience with all four titles here, with hopefully some sense of why I play them and why I love them all.

By xC4Lx, Posted 19 Feb 2014

The first thing I do when looking for a fighting game is how it brings my friends together. Especially when 'drinks' are being passed after a couple of sips each. The roar of losing and the overwhelming feeling of just having to rub it in is always great, upon victory. 'Trash talking' is one of the aspects of brawlers I most look forward to. Those close frantic battles when you start as noobs or even closer, defend and attack battles, after you've chosen the character to try and master. Making the trash talking all that more relevant, and while anticipating the next bout. Giving them a chance, well, a small chance, to exact revenge.

Injustice: Gods Among Us - Ultimate Edition is easily one the best fighting games ever produced. For me, up there with Tekken 6, Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition and Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of two worlds, in no particular order, since I play them for different reasons. I'll be talking about my experience with all four titles here, with hopefully some sense of why I play them and why I love them all, individually.

Injustice: Gods Among Us - Ultimate Edition

Although very similar to (what many fans call) Mortal Kombat 9 (MK) with no real surprise considering they're created by the same developers, NetherRealm Studios, it's an incredibly polished fighting game. With an engrossing story line, fantastic tactical fighting, over the top Super moves and with the inclusion of multi-tiered interactive backgrounds it's enough to stand apart from It's big brother. Nothing but DC characters is of course the main difference, however, it's not the only reason it sets the two apart.

Becoming submerged in the story was easy as it plays like a movie and is something we can expect to happen in the DC universe. Best of all, it takes nothing away from the great writing and acting of all those involved.

Being a huge DC fan, I absolutely loved the story, it felt like a movie, a story mode I could watch/play again and again, and feel just as excited to see my favourite heroes as I did the first time, much like Justice League: Doom, The Flash Point Paradox or The Dark Knight Returns, part 1 and 2. All amazing movies, the Injustice story arc would join those as equals even though it's a game.

Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition,Top Brawlers

Mortal Kombat: Komplete Edition

I personally enjoyed the great story telling in Mortal Kombat, it reinvented MK's complete history much like JJ Abrahms did with Star Trek in 2009. The Komplete Edition giving players the chance to enjoy the full rooster straight from the word 'Fight'. My favourite character being Kenshi, this impressive fighter being tricked into claiming a powerful and mystical sword which it's power turned him blind. Nothing worse then getting beat by a guy who can't see, I would scream.

I Hate Shao Khan with a passion, my apologies, I had to get that off my chest, that final inevitable fight is so annoying, he almost felt unbeatable and I was pretty close to throwing my controller out the window and not just smashing it to pieces on the floor. Looking back at it now though, it was kind of cool because the boss is the boss for a reason!

Tekken 6,Top Brawlers

Tekken 6

I never played the story mode, this title from Namco Bandai Games was always a Mano-a-Mano to the last man competition between me and a group of friends. Some of my best memories are of me winning the last, not so famous, Tekken Tuesday tournament on Tekken 5, around CageTheElephants house back when they lived in London. I still have the Trophy! Reigning champ!

Tekken,Tuesday,Tournament,Reigning,Champ,Trophy

Trying to carry on that tradition I only play this in Versus mode, it's a wonderful fighter with a vast array of characters and fighting styles. No real in game specials, just an out an out martial arts brawl. Fan favourites, like the immortal Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan depicted as Marshall/Forest Law and Lei Wulong included. A great homage to both immortals. It was at the time, the complete fighting experience. I was the complete killing machine with Asuka Kazama towards the end of being transfixed to this amazingly mostly realistic game.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3

This just had to be included. Again, I never played the story mode, can't even remember if this had one. Absolutely loved the 3 on 3 action, over the top super moves and even the graphics was pretty intense. Having never learnt the combo's never seemed a problem as I do what probably most of the gaming world does whenever picking up a fighting game similar to this, throw Street Fighter moves and see what happens. Capcom Eighting did a fantastic job bringing this series back 11 years after the much adored, Marvel vs Capcom 2: Age of new heroes by Capcom Backbone Entertainment.

Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3,Top Brawlers

To add fuel to an everlasting fire, I personally was always more Mortal Kombat then Street fighter. Street fighter never felt like a skill game, button bashing noobs could kick almost anyone off their podiums, unless you mastered the game. Not a true contest. Lol

I'd love to hear what fighting games you loved, whether that be Fight night, MMA, Soul Caliber, WWE or even one from the Dragonball Z series.

What's your top four?

It’s fairly easy when it comes to choosing my top four fighting games. Because the games I’ve played most are obviously going to be among the favorites. Surprisingly though, it got me thinking while picking the top four that I truly enjoyed playing. Looking back, I literally grew up playing the fighting games such as Mortal Kombat, Virtua Fighter, Capcom vs. SNK, The King of Fighters and so many, and I did love them all. Until recently when my schedule got tighter and I had to be very selective about the fighting games, so I mostly stuck to playing Street Fighter. I love how the story goes and the smoothness of its control. I’ve been very infrequent towards Mortal Kombat, because I kinda sucked at it, but it doesn’t mean I didn’t love it. Story mode of MK is unquestionably the best among any game of this genre. Until recently though, I found myself addicted to the Injustice: God Among Us, not only because I’m a huge DC fan but this truly is one of the greatest fighting games ever. Anyway, if I’m to pick my top four, they’ll be Injustice: God Among Us, Street Fighter III: 3rd Strike, Capcom vs. SNK II, and Samurai Shodown.

Good writing btw. But I kinda disagree your remark about Street fighter in the end. I know what you meant but I can’t stop feeling that you probably didn't play against too many skilled opponents.

  • Fighting games have never been my thing but I liked playing Dead or Alive 5, Street Fighter IV, in easy mode and single-player. But I follow their stories via blogs and YouTube, and I completely disagree with your. MK is never better than SF. MK has the same story going over and over again, where as SF has a new story going for each of its games.

  • @Ron Time and Place?

@SnowWhite The main reason I preferred MK to SF is because of the skill level it requires, a noob couldn't beat a skilled player in MK in my opinion. A few fans of SF I spoke to do agree with me in this regards. Of course not all... I believe you can't just hope to bash buttons to beat MK players, you must know the moves, combos and when to use them... Much like Tekken or Injustice.
The story of Injustice is worth watching on YouTube, I do recommend you play the game though (if you haven't already) to get the complete experience.

  • I must admit, fighting games never really have been much of my cup o tea either. However if Smash Bros. counts, then hell yea! Thats now anyways, back in the day SF and Killer Instinct and MK in that order were my favorites. lost plenty of life to killer instinct in particular lol

  • @Dramus Haha... I'd love Smash Bros. to be accepted, it's a can of worms and I think the gaming world has provided us with enough bait for us to open it. I'd love to read an opinion piece on it though.

Man, Killer Instinct, now that would be an awesome read... Bring my memories back...

No DBZ fans out there? *sad face

  • Even though you didn't sound too open, I kinda like this piece more than the Superman one. May be because you spoke about one of my favorite MK characters; Kenshi. It's a shame that many people don't know about him but I find his story cooler than most of the mainstream characters. Anyway, in the end, I ended up being seriously surprised that you don’t play the story modes. Seriously dude! You gotta play the story modes. They are as good as they can get. I’ll accept that you didn’t play Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3’s story mode, but Tekken 6 has an awesome story.

  • @Naomi Tekken wasn't that kind of game for me, it was about training for competition with friends, I wanted to hold on to my trophy. Pick a few characters and master them, if I remember right, Law had like 170 moves, the shortest list was Bruce, the kick boxer, with only 70 odd. Learning when to use them and studying other fighters, it's the main reason I don't play fighting games as much. Takes real dedication to get good. I remember spending almost a month straight, 6 hours a day honing my skills with Asuka. Yes I didn't have a job. Haha

I'd love to read a piece from you on the Tekken 6 story, maybe convince me to go pick it up again.

  • I know a few fighters like you who only concentrate on perfection. Even then you should play the story modes. It’s never easy to win fights at the highest difficult level. But it’s kinda ok though. You enjoy the game with a different approach. And, on the other hand I could hardly master any move. I love Nina and always play as her but I could hardly master her combos. Only if I play for longer hours I remember the one when she breaks through wall and keep keeping her opponent on the air. I want to write sometimes. But working as a QA tester my life is sour enough to have hobbies such as writing. Let me stick to reading for now and I’ll probably start writing after I retire.

  • @Naomi We all, I'm sure, will eagerly wait for that day. The story of Tekken 47 should be a good read. ; )
