Hunter Log #1

By BrunoBRS, Posted 21 Nov 2011
Hello fellow and future hunters! Welcome to my hunting log! Here I’ll be showing you all how awesome my adventures are! And trust me, they’re far from simplistic.

- I arrived at this place, a fishing village named Moga, yesterday. The people were kind and gave me a place to sleep. I wake up the morning after with an earthquake, and rush outside to see what’s happening. What do they tell me? That the terrifying demon of the seas, the Lagiacrus, is their new neighbor and he causes those earthquakes while he’s out hunting… well it’s not like someone is getting injured, right? Wait, you mean your fishing boats are missing? And you want me to get stronger so I can get rid of it? But I just started this job! You know this is going to take a while, right? You don’t mind? Well gee, thanks!

meet Moga Village.

- So I accept to help them. I go outside the village into the Moga Woods to find the elder’s son, who’s probably about my age. He said something about bringing him meat… ok, to my first hunt! I find some herbivores right out of town. I slay a few of them with my sword & shield and grab the loot: a bunch of raw meat. Walking some more I find the hunter base, which is where I’ll start all the quests taking place in Moga Woods… wait a minute, this place is in ruins! Oh, there’s the elder’s son… CARE TO EXPLAIN ME WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON? YOU KNOW THAT THE HUNTER’S GUILD WON’T SEND ME JOBS IF I DON’T HAVE A BASE, RIGHT? Oh… it was the Lagiacrus’ latest earthquake that did it? I… I didn’t know. Sorry for the screaming. So what you’re saying is that all I have to do is grab some resources to help rebuild town? I can take care of it.

- After doing a ton of jobs to get the hang of my new profession, I found out I’m best suited with the great sword. Why? Sure, the sword & shield is really fast, but the great sword’s damage area is HUUUUUGE. And so is its damage.

In this game, you'll be screaming "HELL YEAH! TAKE THAT!" a lot.

- FINALLY! After helping repair practically everything in the village, the guild’s open for business! And my first mission is… grabbing a bunch of mushrooms? That… THAT SUCKS! What kind of hunter do they think I am? I’ve slain more creatures than I can remember, those freaking jaggi follow me everywhere just to bite and annoy me, and you ask me to grab mushrooms? Then you shall have the best mushrooms ever!

- Ok, last mission was really stupid… to the next one… loot the horns of a deer? They don’t even attack! Whatever…

- “The village’s farm is having trouble with jaggi, slay some of them”……. Well, at least I get to kill something that can try to be a threat.

5 minutes later

DIIIIIE STUPID JAGGI!!! There’re just so many of them I just have to remember to dodge their attacks. Aiming? I’m using a great sword, there’s no need to aim!

- Let’s see what now… fishing? Ok. After all that jaggi blood, I could use some peaceful fishing…

10 minutes later

I HATE fishing! Why? Because I ran out of baits before I get the goldfishes the mission asked for… and that, my friend, is what happens to the unprepared. Always make sure you are fully suited for the mission and don’t spend resources on needless things.

- This one seems interesting… getting monsters’ guts? If I remember correctly, only those subaquatic dinos drop it, let’s check them out then.
On the area

I slay here, I loot there… looks like I ran out of enemies before collecting everything… oh wait there are some more there. *a huge shadow rushes over my head in the direction of the monsters and kills them* t-t-t-the L-L-L-La… LAGIACRUS!!!!!

I swim as fast as I can away from it until I lose sight… phew, that was close. But I haven’t finished the mission yet. Lucky me that I’m not the only thing running from big L. My targets ran back to the original area… there! I got all materials. Now all I have to do is go back to the ba-- what’s this eerie theme song? *looks over the shoulder* OH SH**! HE’S BACK! AND HE’S SWIMMING IN MY DIRECTION! Once again, I swim away as fast as I can, going towards the coast. Only this time, the Lagiacrus is chasing me!

I manage to get on my feet and look back… the Lagiacrus is glaring at me, almost like it’s saying “I’ll get you next time. I’ll remember your face and make sure you die slowly”. I haven’t set foot on the beach ever since.

- Great, now I’m the hot topic of the village, since I saw the Lagiacrus and survived… Hey pretty girl from the guild… WHAAAAAAT? An urgent mission? Killing Ludroths, you say? “slightly tougher and more aggressive than what you’re dealt with so far”? I’m on it!

Turns out they are just sea jaggis that require a couple extra slices to die… but at least they have some fancy loot!

- When I return to Moga village, an enormous boat is anchored on the docks. That’s weird… hey chief, what’s this boat? “It’s Moga village’s connection with the rest of the world, it’s how we get our supplies. It’s the Argosy!” Of course! The famous Argosy! From which I never heard of… BUT while they’re around, the supplies tent sell everything for half the price, a master chef which also happens to be a cat decides to stay, and the captain offers me trading commodities I find for rare items. There isn’t much to complain.

- Ok guild, you’ve seen what I’m capable of, give me the real deal! *scrolls for some missions* killing the Great Jaggi? That’s my pleasure!

I prepare myself for the mission to come. My first big hunt. This is it. The moment I’ll prove the guild what I’m made of. I pick the usual stuff (map, some whetstones to sharpen the blade if it gets rusty, some rations and first aid) plus a pair of paintballs to make it possible to locate the target enemy once it runs away, and a poisoned steak.

My intuition was right, and I found the Great Jaggi exactly where I thought it would be at. He growls and suddenly, the whole area is crawling with jaggis. Thought one was annoying? Try 20 of them. I try to set up the poisoned meat as a trap, but clearly fail, as I was spotted. While attempting to hit the Great Jaggi, I slay some minor foes on my way, which makes it easier. I’m still not familiar with its attack patterns, so I’m having a tough time dealing with his spee-- *falls unconscious* *wakes up back at the base* ouch… that hurt. If only I had blocked and dodged more, and run away when health was low so I could heal myself… I can only be defeated another time; on the third defeat, the mission fails. Good thing I hit him with my paintball, now I can see him on the map!

Great, he moved to Area 7, there’s more open space there. Lesson learned, I started dodging more and trying to focus less on damaging the smaller foes. POW! He fell! But he’s not dead yet. Nooo… there’s still a long way to go, but that shows some progress. Some dodging and slicing later, I repeated my mistake and didn’t run when health was low. Last chance.

He’s now on Area 5, the connection between the coast and the land. It’s large enough for a good fight. I attack, he misses, I attack some more and then… he’s running away! He ran through some rocks I can’t go through… but he dropped something! And looking at what it is, it’ll fetch a nice price.
I seriously spent five minutes roaming, looking for where he’d show up. I started to worry that I’d fail the mission because I let the Great Jaggi escape, but then he appears right in front of me! Fearing it was the paintball’s effect that wore off, I throw another one… and miss. Great.

I manage to knock him down another time, but this time, he runs away towards area 6. I take it as a chance to heal and prepare for what can be the last encounter. Yes, because not only is the Great Jaggi running away more frequently, but his instincts are starting to fail. He hasn’t called for more jaggis in a long while, his attacks aren’t as vicious, he’s moving differently and not running from one side to the other as much. He’s showing signs of weakness. To area 6.

To my surprise, I find him sleeping on his nest. I’m not losing the opportunity. I fully charge my attack and hit him, starting a combo right away. I knew he was about to die when I noticed his tail attack wouldn’t shove me away or damage me when I blocked it. All he was doing is swinging his tail in panic from one side to the other.

One slash later, the almighty Great Jaggi is dead. I can’t believe it. I did it. I defeated my first boss. The Great Jaggi has been defeated by me alone. The happiness growing inside of me is uncontrollable and suddenly I’m jumping of joy.
