Borderlands (Xbox 360)

4/5

Pros:  Weapons, weapons and more weapons, each weapon feels unique, multiplayer is a blast, many classes to choose from each with a unique ability.

Cons:  Poor loot system, lackluster story, quests aren't enticing, vehicles are difficult to handle

A first-person role-playing game set in a sort of post-apocalyptic world called Pandora with bandits and alien-like animals, hmmm….sound familiar to a game called Fallout?

Well it really isn’t because Borderlands does some things important that Fallout didn't do.  When you aim at something and shoot, you will hit that target.  No magic/ hidden dice rolling determining whether your skill is good enough to hit a specific target.  Another main thing Borderlands does right, that will be mentioned later, is guns and a lot of them.

One of the first things you need for a good RPG is a great storyline and well…don’t look to this game because the storyline isn’t that great and it never captures your attention for too long as well as the many side quests you encounter.  Each quest you can click through and just follow the quest helper on the map to complete because the quest helper is just too generous.  Rarely do you find yourself really applying yourself to looking for an objective, just follow the blinking dot on your radar.  Though Borderlands doesn’t bode well with story it makes up for it with the character class creation.

There are four classes to choose from: Mordecai (Sniper), Roland (Soldier), Lilith (Siren), Brick (Berserker) each with 3 different subclasses to allot your skill points into that you gain with each level.  Some classes are more than a challenge than others for instance, Lilith’s ability to disappear for awhile makes taking down enemies a little one sided while Mordecai may have a harder time if enemies close in making it harder for his sniping abilities. Borderlands made up for this though with the ability to master every kind of weapon so even though it might be best for Mordecai to snipe it also might be a good idea to master a sub machine gun or pistol for close quarter combat.  Each class also has an active ability that helps them in a jam. Mordecai has a pet bird that can attack enemies coming in too close or ducking behind cover, Roland can drop a sentry gun to take on swarms of enemies, Lilith can disappear to escape and get in a better fighting position and Brick can go berserk for a short time and use his fists to beat down his enemies.  Each of these abilities can be upgraded within the sub classes but it's up to you what you want to upgrade, the choice is yours where you want to allot your skill point after each level is up to you.  Aside from abilities your character can upgrade you can always upgrade the important thing by your side and that’s your trusty weapon!

A shotgun with a scope? In Borderlands, it's possible

Yes! Weapons! The bread and butter of Borderlands.  There are so many weapons in this game to choose from that you’ll discover new weapons you’ve never seen on your 2nd playthrough.  Each weapon feels different and the difference will really show whether it’s the fire rate, zoom, accuracy or if there’s elemental damage and this is where Borderlands really starts to shine.  You forget about the no story element and you focus on one big aspect; the loot.  Finding that perfect Sniper Rifle that fits your needs, finding that elemental shotgun that shoots corrosive damage, this part of the game is so enticing it will have you playing over and over until you reach that level cap.  There is a problem with this amount of loot though and it’s during multiplayer.

During multiplayer, with up to three other players, it turns into every man for himself when it comes to loot.  There is no trade or barter system in place so if players want to make a trade between each other you have to drop it on the ground and have the other player pick it up each time.  It’s a slow process and would have been better if there was some sort of trade system in place.  Aside from that blip of annoyingness multiplayer is a blast. Enemies are a lot tougher when grouped with your friends encouraging teamwork between the classes.  Within each class’s subclass there are group helping skills that empower your group that can really help or some that can just increase the loot which is never a bad thing.

Fighting large enemies like this one is more exciting with a friend

Getting around the landscape of Pandora can be done in a vehicle spawned from the "Catch-a-Ride Station" that can be equipped with a Rocket Launcher or a Machine Gun.  Riding around with your friends or alone squishing enemies under your wheels is satisfying but can become very annoying when trying to fight other vehicle bound enemies.  The driving can seem clunky and slow when trying to get the aim on enemies driving around you in circles so sometimes it's better to just get out and fight on your feet.

Visually, Borderlands showcases unique cell shading that brings the brown barren landscape of Pandora to life.  Shooting enemies in the head will result in a satisfying blood pinanta or corroding enemies with a corrosive weapon watching them melt away into a pool of green goo.  They definitely chose the right art direction for the game that fits the setting.

Looking past the storyline that doesn’t really matter too much and the loot system Borderlands is a great game and if you are playing with friends you know then the loot system of “every man for himself” won’t be an issue and you will be able to enjoy Borderlands for it’s great weapon system and RPG class system that makes each character quite unique from each other.

  • Very nicely reviewed. I totally agree with you. The story doesn't go too deep compared to the games standard. Other than that it's a great game.

  • I didn't like the way we had to take missions. Why booths? Why not they way TK BAHA gave the first mission. Too many weapons were annoying sometime too. Also the boss fights were fairly easy. But it was a good game to play.

  • @Xiao You make some good points and you're not the first person I've heard that dislikes how many weapons in the game but in the end it is quite enjoyable.

  • I loved the game mostly because of it's visual. I too agree with you about the story. But the game was quite good. Never had the chance to play in multiplayer mode. Sounds like it would be something really cool.
