Alienware is known for creating some of the most powerful gaming desktops and laptops on the market today. With powerful commodities such as the Alienware Aurora, Alienware 18, and Alienware X51 taking on the next-generation consoles. On November 19 Alienware launched their Landing Tour in New York City and I was able to attend. For the first time I was able to get my hands on the Alienware X51 desktop, the device that claims to be the one-stop gaming and entertainment system, and I was impressed.
At first glance the X51 is no bigger than a Xbox One. The design is sleek and impressive - a machine you would definitely want to show off. The Alienware logo is presented on the front of the X51 and changes colors through a customizable option or automatically changes while playing a game. I was unable to get the exact components of each device, but judging by the performance it can be inferred that it is the best version of the X51.
During the event I was able to play Call of Duty Ghosts, Need for Speed Rivals, and Shadow Warrior. Each game on the X51 performed surprisingly well on the X51 with smooth resolution, 60 FPS, and incredible precision. Other than one noticeable glitch with Need for Speed Rivals, each title played wonderfully. I was able to touch each X51 and noticed that each system generated low heat and was relatively quiet. Each device was playable using a Xbox 360 controller, with no option for a mouse and keyboard. It’s strange that both a controller and keyboard option weren’t available. However I assume that the event was tailored to convince console gamers that the X51 was able to give a similar experience.
Graphically the systems were spectacular, but what about sound? The headsets provided, I assume were also Dell products, nullified the booming music in the background, featuring remixes of the original Legend of Zelda theme and Sonic the Hedgehog 2’s Chemical Zone. I was able to pick up on footsteps in the background, roaring engines coming from my vehicle, and each slice of my blade.
As a gaming device X51 delivers a console quality experience, but I would have loved to see how it performed with other applications and programs. Since it's advertised as a gaming and entertainment device, I would’ve liked to see how the X51 operated using other programs. I’m an avid console gamer but I left with a positive outlook of the Alienware X51, and PC gaming. It provided a high-quality gaming experience within a small PC, and those seeking a powerful, yet compact, device should consider the Alienware X51.
