Now for what we like to call the all singing and all dancing category, incorporating music, dance and fitness games in one tidy bundle. There hasn’t been all that great a variety this past year, especially with no games coming from either the Rock Band or Guitar Hero series after the rhythm-instrument genre became saturated with a chain of prolific and somewhat repetitive releases. However, let that take nothing away from our current candidates as there are some pretty stellar entries and each one deserves to be highlighted in their own right.

Child of Eden  (PS3, 360)
The game has been developed by the same people that brought you Rez and follows a very similar formula - one that is highly addictive. Who knew that shooting things to music could be so much fun? Especially when used in conjunction with Microsoft Kinect or PlayStation Move.

Dance Central 2  (360)
While it maintains the core gameplay of the original it feels that little bit sharper and provides dancers everywhere a greater and more varied selection of hits than ever to bop along to in their livingroom. The simultaneous two-player options mean you needn’t make a fool of yourself alone anymore.

Groove Coaster  (iOS)
This Apple exclusive rhythm game for the latest ‘i’ Devices adds a fresh new spin on hugely popular titles such as Tap Tap, adding a little more depth to proceeding’s and overall the experience feels a little more organic when you’re tapping, scratching and flicking your fingers along to the music.

Just Dance 3  (PS3, 360, Wii)
Just Dance is the rubber to Dance Central’s glue, however, while its rival offers two-player modes this offers up to four and a list of songs that are arguably not as teeny bop. The game also has the added bonus of some cool shuffle features that will keep you on your toes in every sense.

UFC Personal Trainer  (PS3, 360, Wii)
A debate was had as to which category this would go in, Fitness or Fighting, but what wasn’t in question was its place in our list. The game has some great videos and workouts designed to motivate you and with the added appeal of the UFC brand it’s a great way to stay in shape and fight off those extra pounds.

Fans of Rez have been crying out for a successor to the addictive rail-shooter for a decade and with Child of Eden the time finally came. The game is entertaining enough with a controller, but if you want to experience all it has to offer in the best way possible then Microsoft Kinect is the way to go, where aiming is done with your hands and changing weapons is a clap away. There’s also the option to add additional controllers that can be held for vibration. The game is ideal for those looking to get into rail-shooters as its easily accessible, yet challenging enough to give you something to aim for, and I’d even urge those that are put off by something that dips into the rhythm genre to at least try it as it has a lot to offer to hardcore and casual gamers alike.
