Top 5 Video Game Trees

What are your five favourite trees in video games?

By fishdalf, Posted 12 Nov 2011

It’s probably not a question you’ve ever asked yourself, or perhaps it is, because you have nothing better to do, but what are your five favourite trees in video games? With that I give to you my five personal picks. World of Warcraft excluded, with the many unique forms of foliage contained within being disregarded for their sheer number alone.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time
Name: Great Deku Tree
Released: 1998

The Great Deku Tree is a somewhat recurring character from the Legend of Zelda series, first appearing in the critically-acclaimed Ocarina of Time as a forest protector of the spirits. The moments spent in the game saving the tree and ridding it of the curse imposed by Ganondorf, the then Gerudo King of Thieves, are some of the best it has to offer. The tree is also rumoured to appear in The Wind Waker, far earlier in its life cycle, but many argue this is the Great Deku Sprout, also seen in Ocarina of Time, telling Link the truth about  the death of his mother and his true heritage as a Hylian.

Kirby’s Dream Land
Name: Whispy Woods
Released: 1992

Whispy Woods, or Whispy as he is sometimes known, is a regular foe of Kirby, dating back as far as the conception of the puffy pink ball himself, and features prominently atop the box art of the Game Boy classic. His appearance hasn’t changed all that much over the years, sporting a silly Pinocchio nose and an almost constant look of surprise. Despite being one of the more famous bosses from the series, alongside King Dedede, he is one of the easiest to defeat, with his attacks limited to dropping apples from his lofty branches and blowing gusts of wind. Defeating him usually consists of dodging said wind, inhaling said fruit, and propelling them back at him for an easy kill.

Plants vs. Zombies
Name: Tree of Wisdom
Released: 2009

There are many great examples of shrubbery in the super-addictive Plants vs. Zombies with many great uses, but none that can be considered trees as such. However, once the main adventure mode is complete and the shop throws up more goodies to spend your well-fought coins on, then you can purchase the aptly-named Tree of Wisdom, which once fed, dishes out nudge-nudge-wink-wink tips the taller it grows, and is actually a pretty inventive and humorous way to dispense gameplay advice. It also provides the player with cheat codes that will do thing’s such as give all zombies’ moustaches, because everybody wants to see that.

Pokémon Gold & Silver
Name: Sudowoodo
Released: 1999

Is it a grass type? Is it a ground type? No. It’s Sudowoodo the… rock type Pokémon. Famed as being that annoying tree-looking thing blocking your path for no apparent reason, one must squirt the tyke in the face with water in order to clear the way. It’s for this reason he has been given a bad rap, and of course his dire appearance. Oh and to top it all off, he has some of the most pathetic speed and special attack stats of the now 646 strong species. Despite all that you just have to love the guy, Brock certainly does (pictured), and if he’s good enough for him then he’s alright in my book, or Pokédex, or whatever.

Fable II
Name: Swamp Troll
Released: 2008

One of the strongest trolls you will encounter in Fable II is the swamp troll, who can not only pound your head into the ground with its huge fists, but can also poison you while doing it. Defeating one is achieved with an astute combination of magic and ranged attacks, aiming directly for their exposed tendrils and going full pelt. Unlike the first game where trolls were more of a normality, here their cameos are rare and their impact bigger, with the Swamp Troll - equipped with tree on back, amongst a growth of twigs, dirt and general frondescence - the more imposing of the bunch.
