Boy, Sony sure likes to make enemies don’t they?

South Korean electronics giant LG has recently won a court injunction battle against Sony. In turn, The Hague, a Dutch civil court has allowed LG to seize new and incoming PS3 shipments headed towards UK and the rest of Europe, banning Sony’s console in these regions for a total of 10 days. According to the Guardian, Sony and LG are disputing over patents regarding the inclusion of Blu-ray in PS3s.

Numerous PS3 consoles have already been seized by European Customs officials in some regions like the Netherlands. The rest of the consoles are being kept in Dutch warehouses until the matter is finally solved. Should Sony fail in having the injunction overturned, PS3 import bans across Europe will be extended. PS3s will eventually be ripped from “high street shelves,” and stockpiles “could run out within two to three weeks,”as the Guardian reports.

Sony is no stranger when it comes to filing injunctions against LG, as I understand they are involved in a total of seven patent disputes right now. A recent one is Sony attempting to block shipments of LG smartphones towards US shores. According to TechZone360.com, allegations toward the company were focused around LG infringing patented technology that included “encoding and transmitting audio to suit bandwidth capacity” and “photo-based caller ID.”

"We are currently looking into this matter, and cannot make any comments at this point in time," a Sony rep has stated.

  • Banning for 10 days isn't a big deal. I think, it will be solved soon.

  • lmao i think this could start a revolution if it was what i thought it was. but im a xbox man so i dont care but im sure ps3 users would be mighty angry lol

  • Ouch. that will hurt sales. it will really hurt them if it moves to the US. but 10 IS 10 days in my opinion.

  • wait so there banned for havng blue ray?

    Posted Mar 02, 2011

  • @Draken: It's basically about LG claiming Sony was infringing on patent-related technology in the blu-ray. It had something to do with playback on Blu-ray discs, resulting in LG filing an injunction against Sony. Either Sony messed around with the tech and did something they weren't supposed to according to the patent accusations, or LG is just being paranoid.
